Cosmetic dentistry is more than just treating a few teeth in the front. We think, it must take into account the person behind the teeth, their thoughts, their habits, the history of dental work, their expectations, and more. When it comes to actual treatment, we may approach this matter by means of teeth whitening, full porcelain crowns, veneers, orthodontics, composites and even periodontal considerations. Lastly, we think everything we do in restorative dentistry must be esthetically pleasing. Even if it is a filling that nobody can see.
Teeth whitening using professional whitening agent is a popular procedure and can be done in the comfort of your home. Each case must be evaluated carefully, and pros and cons of each case must be presented to the patient. This is not a “one size fits all” process. The enamel consistency, and its thickness, shade, gum recession, pre-existing restorations, tendencies towards sensitivity and many other aspects must be considered prior to bleaching. Most people may safely perform this procedure after a thorough analysis by a dentist.
One of the best options for professional teeth whitening in our opinion is a take home whitening kit. The reason we prefer this method is the flexibility that comes with it for the patient. Giving patient a future option to continue whitening as needed rather than relying on chairside whitening every time touch-ups are needed. We find that our patients like the take home option. For this reason, and for better tooth sensitivity control, we have decided to concentrate more on take home kits. We do carry different gel types and concentrations to fit different teeth profiles.
What is involved in a whitening appointment?
We make molds of your teeth, and fabricate custom trays which fit properly and allow for a more effective whitening process. You will always have these custom trays and you can use them as needed. We will recommend a specific gel for your needs, and will give you written, and verbal instructions. Follow up appointments are there as needed if you have any questions. Involving your dentist in this process can achieve better results, while minimizing risks to your enamel.
Some of the advantages of take-home custom whitening kit:
- You can choose to limit the duration of your whitening at home to ensure your teeth are not becoming sensitive. You may gradually increase the time the trays remain in the mouth. You can go at your own pace. Giving you more control over this process under supervision is the best way in our experience.
- You will have the trays and the gel to do occasional at home touch-ups to address new stains.
- When you run out of gel, you will only need to purchase more gel, or different type of gel. No need to purchase trays again.
Chairside veneers, or composite veneers, are quicker, more affordable and require only one visit.
In deciding to opt for the chairside veneer, there are a couple of issues to decide. First, the chairside veneer is less costly, but will also last only 5 to 7 years compaired to porcelain veneers which will last 10-15 years.
Chairside veneers are a more conservative approach to cosmetic teeth improvement, but in general, should be used for milder cosmetic concerns.

A porcelain veneer is a thin shell made of a porcelain that is custom-made to fit your tooth. It will be a shade of color that matches your other teeth.
Benefits of porcelain veneers:
- Long lasting and strong
- Natural looking
- Less enamel removed than cap or crown
The procedure to put porcelain veneers on your teeth involves removing a small amount of enamel from the tooth in order to make room for the veneers. Then, Dr. Josephs will take a mold of the prepare teeth and pick a shade of white which will look the most natural and best for your smile.
This mold is sent to the lab that creates the porcelain veneers. When ready, Dr. Josephs will place them on your teeth, checking the fit and shape. He will adjust, clean and bond them to your teeth.
